Our History Buff Says:

Bear witness to American courage at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. The memorial is a series of statues and plaques serving to commemorate the soldiers who fought and died in the Korean War. Located a short walk from the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial is a fitting tribute to those who served in that tragic war.

From 1950 to 1953, American and United Nations forces fought in the Korean Peninsula in an attempt to stop the Communist takeover of South Korea. Over 600,000 members of the UN force were killed. It wasn't until 1986, that the Korean War Veterans Memorial was authorized by Congress, and completed in 1995.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial is constructed as a triangle, intersecting a circle. Within the triangle are 19 larger-than-life-size stainless steel statues of soldiers dressed in full combat gear. To the north of these statues is a wall listing all 22 of the UN nations that contributed troops to the Korean War. To the south of the statues is a wall that forms the second side of the triangle, containing photographic images of the war sandblasted into it. The third side of the triangle, facing the Lincoln Memorial, is left open. The circle section of the Korean War Veterans Memorial contains the shallow, 30-foot-diameter Pool of Remembrance, lined with black granite and inscriptions listing the number of American and UN troops killed, wounded, missing and captured.

After their tour of the Korean War Veterans Memorial, visitors can find dozens of restaurants in the downtown Washington area, with everything from health food to deli within easy walking distance.

To get to the Korean War Veterans Memorial, visitors should take the Metro's Orange Line to the Foggy Bottom Metro Station, then walk one mile south.

Visit the Korean War Veterans Memorial and pay respect to American bravery.
