Come see where age-old beauty meets 19th century brawn at Fort Washington Park in Fort Washington, Maryland. The park commemorates the site of an American fortress destroyed in the War of 1812, and today offers visitors the chance to learn about the history of the site, as well as experience the breathtaking scenery through hiking and other outdoors activities.

The original Fort Washington was completed in 1809 and destroyed in the War of 1812. In 1824, Fort Washington was rebuilt and served as the only defensive fort protecting Washington, DC, for many decades. In 1946, the last military personnel left Fort Washington and the fort was turned over to the Department of the Interior to become Fort Washington Park.

The museum at Fort Washington Park contains artifacts from throughout the fort's history of service in defending the capital. A three-mile hiking trail along the perimeter of Fort Washington Park offers visitors the chance for adventure and wildlife viewing. Picnicking and fishing are also available at the park. Visitors can find a variety of restaurants in nearby Fort Washington, ranging from pizza to Chinese cuisine.

To get to Fort Washington Park, take I-95 to exit 3, then turn right at Fort Washington Road. Visit Fort Washington Park and commemorate the defense of the nation's capital.
