Off the Beaten Path in Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland

Things to do / Travel Guide

As an area filled with major attractions and historic sites, it can take a little bit of effort to find the less-visited, but no-less-fascinating, attractions in the DC region.

History buffs are likely to find plenty sites of interest in the Washington DC region beyond the more-visited attractions. One of these off-the-beaten-track sites is the C&O Canal, which is both a historic and scenic area. The Georgetown and Foggy Bottom areas allow the option for a lazy stroll along the Potomac River, and can be a great escape after a long day of sight-seeing.

The Arlington National Cemetery can too often be a forgotten stop for many tourists, but offers important historical value. Visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the thousands of military graves can be a rewarding way to appreciate the contributions of the United States military.

For travelers looking to integrate a day at the beach into their DC vacations, Chesapeake Beach and Sandy Point State Park are both only 35-miles outside of the city.

Finally, if you find yourself in the DC suburb of Wheaton, Maryland, for a truly unique experience, you can visit the Metro station and enjoy a ride along the longest escalator in the western hemisphere. The 500-foot-long ride takes you up an ascent of some 200 feet.
