Fishing Guide for Chesapeake Bay, Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland

Things to do / Travel Guide

With the Potomac River running through DC, the city is home to some great fishing. It doesn't take much time to travel from the downtown areas to some ideal fishing spots for a great fishing trip. Near Georgetown, a marina allows easy access to the Potomac River for the leisure fisherman. On good weather days you're likely to see a large collection of people along the river's banks in search of the many different species of fish found in the DC area, including salmon, bass, trout, walleye, crappie, and panfish among others.

In Baltimore, chartered fishing trips originate out of Baltimore Harbor, departing from Fells Point.
Options exist for three-, five-, or even eight-hour trips, perfect for family groups, which will take you deep into the Chesapeake Bay.

The following sites are ideal spots for casting off:
  • Fletcher's Boat House - Easily accessible from Georgetown and sitting on the Potomac, this is an option that allows for great fishing without the need to travel far out of the city.
  • Theodore Roosevelt Island - A 91-acre island on the Potomac River, two and half miles of trails provide access to the waterfront in this area dedicated as a tribute to the American president and nature lover.
  • Tidal Basin - The site of the Jefferson Memorial, fishing is allowed in the basin and in nearby East and West Potomac Park. Minutes from the downtown areas, a bounty of fish swim through these waters.
  • James Creek Marina - At the meeting points of the Potomac River and Anacostia River, the marina offers access for those traveling with a boat.
Fishing licenses are required for anybody between the ages of 16 and 65 and must be obtained from the DC Department of Health.
