Things to do / Travel Guide
The city planners of Washington DC made sure that, within the government buildings and political operations that defined the city, there would exist a considerable amount of greenery and gardens for visitors and residents to enjoy.
United States Botanic Garden
The United States Botanic Garden is located on Capitol Hill and is run and budgeted by Congress. The Garden is made up of three separate components. The Conservatory consists of several sections, featuring various species of plant life collected from around the globe. A park on the other side of the garden includes many of these species and is designed to inspire visitors to become involved with gardening-related pursuits in their own homes. Finally, a production facility helps research new methods of propagation of plant life and prepares new plants for display in the Garden and in plant shows around the country.
National Arboretum
The National Arboretum, also located within the city limits, maintains nearly 500 different species of trees, shrubs, and plants that are grown for purposes of science and education. The arboretum welcomes more than 500,000 guests each year with the spring and autumn months being most popular times to visit.
Other gardens and parks focusing on plant life within Washington DC are Constitution Garden, Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Brookside Gardens, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, River Farm, and Green Spring Gardens Park.
Baltimore
The Howard Peter Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Park in Baltimore can be found in Druid Hill Park and consists of 35 different flower beds spread out over a 1½-acre area.
