When the sun goes down and the stars come out, DC becomes a city with a pulsing nightlife. The primary clubbing hotspots are centered in the neighborhoods of Georgetown, Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, and Capitol Hill. Each offers a variety of bars and restaurants and caters to crowds every night of the week. While Georgetown and Capitol Hill are geared to an older and slightly more upper-class and laid-back crowd, Adams Morgan is the scene where you can really let loose. Dupont Circle features several bars and clubs for the gay and lesbian scene.

Some of the city's suburbs also feature in the DC nightlife scene. Most notably, Bethesda, Maryland, which is just a short Metro ride away, has become a sought-after destination for revelers.

If it's theatrical performances you're after, DC is just as unlikely to disappoint. The Folger Shakespeare Library features a celebrated theater with regular shows. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hosts world-renowned acts of all types from Broadway-style plays to full orchestra performances. The Center is home to the National Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Opera, the Washington Ballet, and many jazz concerts.

Classical music performances are presented at other venues around the city including at the National Gallery, National Building Museum, and, on occasion, churches and universities around the city.

Washington regularly hosts traveling theater companies which put on some of the most recognized plays from the Broadway circuit. One such venue is the centrally-located National Theater, which attracts a fair share of big name of performances. Next door, the Warner Theater similarly hosts well-recognized acts and shows. Ford's Theater, best known as the site where Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed, remains a functioning theater and mainly features plays that are designed to illustrate through entertainment different segments and episodes from across American history.


As a major metropolitan city, DC attracts its fair share of big name rock acts and concerts. The city's largest indoor venue is the MCI Center, home to the National Basketball Association's Washington Wizards and the National Hockey League's Washington Capitols.

The area surrounding Baltimore's Inner Harbor is the city's entertainment hotspot. Numerous shopping and entertainment venues dot the waterfront area and offer visitors many hours of enjoyment. The Inner Harbor hosts musical performances on weekends and holidays, while street performers are always around to add to the fun area's atmosphere.
