Our Museum Expert Says:

Celebrate Cahuilla Indian culture alongside outstanding contemporary art! Explore architecture and photography and much more at the Palm Springs Desert Museum.

Located in downtown Palm Springs against a mountain backdrop, the Palm Springs Desert Museum is housed in a beautiful building which blends right into the hillside. Established in 1938, the Palm Springs Art Museum has become the center of the desert's art community and includes world-class Western and Native American art collections, the natural history of the desert, and an outstanding anthropology department, primarily representing the local Cahuilla tribe.

Traditional Indian life as it was lived for centuries is illustrated by tools, baskets, and other relics, and art lovers will surely enjoy the modern and contemporary American works by artists such as Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Duane Hanson, and Mark di Suvero. The Palm Springs Desert Museum also houses 2 photography collections and ample architecture holdings, including the Albert Frey Archive and Frey House II, as well as the E. Stewart Williams Architecture Archive. Visitors can enjoy plays, lectures, and other events presented in the museum's Annenberg Theater. And families should not miss Zone 101 in the Hoover Gallery for free family activities, art, poetry, music and storytelling.

The Palm Springs Desert Museum is located in downtown Palm Springs on Museum Drive at Tahquitz Canyon Way, just west of N. Palm Canyon Drive.
