Things to do / Travel Guide
One thing's for sure in this region: It doesn't get much hotter than this! The California Desert region has clear, dry and sunny weather year round. Winters are warm and pleasant while summers are scorching hot. It doesn't cool down too much in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall either, as temperatures still often reach the 90s. True of most deserts, rain barely falls here, with about 15 to 20 days precipitation a year. If you're ever unsure of the temperature in this region stop by Baker, where you can catch a glimpse of the World's Tallest Thermometer.
Winter is one of the best times to visit the California desert, as, while the rest of the country goes into a deep freeze, you can still lounge around in shorts in places like Palm Springs. The mercury keeps on rising throughout the spring. When summer hits, you'll know it. Long summers feature scorching hot weather; even at night it doesn't cool down much. In other words, there's a good reason they call it Death Valley. The weather finally gets a little cooler and more bearable in the fall, accompanied by clear, sunny skies.
