Things to do / Travel Guide
Visitors to the California Desert who have an urge to go kayaking don't need to continue traveling out to the coasts of Los Angeles or San Diego to get their fix. Some great canoeing and kayaking in this region is available at either Big Bear Lake or Salton Sea.
Kayaking in Big Bear Lake
Virtually all types of recreational boating are available at Big Bear Lake, including kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boating. The lake is over seven miles long with 22 miles of shoreline, leaving you more than enough room to set out on an enjoyable kayaking excursion. Kayaks and canoes can be rented at Big Bear Marina or at Pleasure Point Marina.
Kayaking in Salton Sea
Salton Sea, California's largest lake, lies deep in the Mojave Desert and has a 14-mile kayak route for your enjoyment. The trail runs from behind the visitor center at Varner Harbor to the Bombay Beach Campground. Warm lake temperatures and the opportunity to view all kinds of birds make kayaking here a very special and pleasant experience. Be advised, however, that should you choose to kayak or canoe here, you'll need to bring your own boat, as there are no rentals available in the vicinity.
