Parks in Palm Springs
The California Desert region has a great spot where teenagers will love to perform skateboard tricks. The Palm Springs Skatepark is considered by many to be among the finest skateparks in California, with its sprawling system of pools, ramps, and half pipes, as well as a very large street skating course. The park is located right in the middle of the Palm Springs, where you can check out skateboarders carving up the park or, if you're so inclined, take on the aerials and grinds of the park yourself. It's also a good place to let junior do his or her thing while you and your significant other get a few hours to vacation in the city on your own.
Another great spot in the city is the Ruth Hardy Park. Across from the shaded trails and fountains (swimming permitted) of the movie colony estate, it features tennis courts, huge playgrounds, forests, and tons of area to take the kids for a picnic.
Parks in Big Bear Lake
Throughout Big Bear Lake, there are open, grassy spots along the lake where you can take the whole family, play catch, fly a kite, or just hang out. Check out the Aspen Glen Picnic Area off of Mill Creek Road to enjoy lunch in the sun. The Petting Zoo in Big Bear City has everything from peacocks to potbelly pigs to miniature horses. Younger kids are sure to love an afternoon hanging out with these laid-back animals.
Parks in San Bernardino
San Bernardino features over 20 municipal parks, dotted all around the city, and with the nearly year-round sunny weather in this California Desert city and the nearby San Bernardino Mountains casting an impressive backdrop, you'll find a ton of great city parks to visit with your family.
For instance, you can choose to check out Anne Shirrells Park, off of North California Street, which offers athletic facilities such as basketball and sand volleyball courts, as well as picnic tables and barbecue grills for after (or before) a game. Blair Park on West Marshall Boulevard has tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and even a skateboard park, along with the expected picnic tables. Finally, Wildwood Park off East 40th Street is unique in that it has a dog park, where you can take your furriest family members with you.
