- The lowest point in the continental United States, Badwater in Death Valley (282 feet below sea level), is within 100 miles of the highest point in the continental United States (Mount Whitney 14,505 feet).
- Covering nearly 3 million acres, San Bernardino County is the largest county in the lower 48 states. Orange County could not be reached for comment.
- Death Valley is considered the hottest, driest place in the United States, with temperatures regularly over 120º F in the summer. The hottest temperature ever recorded in the United States was 134º F at Death Valley in July, 1913.
- An incredible architectural feat and civil engineering landmark, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was completed in 1963 after helicopters were used to erect four of its five supporting towers.
- The ancient bristlecone pine of Inyo National Forest is the oldest living tree species on Earth. Methuselah, the oldest tree in the forest, is over 4,700 years old.
- Single? It should be easy for you to find a date around Palm Springs. The Coachella valley produces more of these palm tree fruits than any other place in the country.
- San Bernardino is home to the world's first McDonald's. The city is also home to the world's first branch of the Hells Angels motorcycle club, somewhat less known than McDonalds for their culinary fast-food innovations.
- A group of lost pioneers in the winter of 1850 coined the name “Death Valley” when after being rescued by two scouts looked back across the Panamint Mountains and said “Goodbye, Death Valley.”
- The world's tallest thermometer is located just off I-15 in Baker. At 134 feet high, and regularly recording temperatures of over 100º F, you can't miss it.
