Things to do / Travel Guide
Looking to cruise around on the water, surrounded by soaring mountains or endless forests of pine trees? The California Desert region may not be appropriately named for water-based activities, but it still has a couple fantastic oases! An afternoon spent on the water is a perfect way to experience the natural beauty of the region, as well as to cool off a bit in the hotter months of the year.
Pleasure Boating on Big Bear Lake
Pleasure boating opportunities are numerous on beautiful Big Bear Lake, in the shadow of the San Bernardino Mountains. All types of motorboats, from small, four-person, nine-foot fishing boats, to larger pontoon boats, are available for rent on the shores of the lake. A few hours spent racing, cruising, or just floating around on the beautiful deep-blue mountain lake is a sure recipe for a good time. Among the lake's best spots for renting recreational watercrafts is Pleasure Point Marina. Pontoon boats for larger parties, small fishing boats, “electric fun boats,” and “electric canoes” are all available.
Pleasure Boating on Salton Sea
Salton Sea, California's largest lake, is surrounded by beautiful desert scenery that makes it a great place to go pleasure boating. With a huge, expansive surface area of over 380 square miles, and relatively high water salinity, boats that sail the Salton Sea can potentially reach higher speeds than on almost any other body of water in the country. All types of boats, including motorboats and jet skis, are permitted. Seven marinas, mostly located around the northern half of the lake, have boat ramps and mooring areas that are easily accessible from the road, and almost all of them offer pleasure boats for rent.
Pleasure Boating in the northern California Desert
Nestled in the Inyo Mountains outside of Lone Pine, Diaz Lake is a gorgeous mountain lake that was originally created by an earthquake in 1872 that caused a spring to burst open filling the lowland. From May 15th-October the lake is open to water sports, with jet skis, sailboats, wake boarders, and other pleasure boats taking to the water. Lone Pine, located less than three miles away from the lake, is the spot to rent recreational equipment and water craft.
