Our Ski Specialist Says:

Have you ever wished you could ride to the top of the mountain in a warm bus with padded seats and not have to worry about standing in a cold lift line? Sounds like every skiers dream doesn't it? Moose Mountain ski area, 10 miles outside Fairbanks, does exactly that with their ski busses which take the place of chairlifts at this unique ski area.

Moose Mountain is open from Friday through Sunday, on school breaks, and on holidays from November through April, as long as the temperatures remain above -20 degrees Fahrenheit. The Mountain's summit peaks at 1,987 feet with a southern exposure that means softer snow but, on the bright side, makes Moose's location about 10-15 degrees warmer than the biting cold temperatures in the city of Fairbanks itself which is a nice relief at these temperatures.

In Moose Mountain's 200 acres, you'll find 35 trails suited to the entire range of levels. There is a small beginners' area which also serves as the ski school hill and children's program center. On the remaining 22-26 intermediate and advanced trails you'll discover bowls, wide tree lanes, and natural moguls. Don't miss out on the adjoining 100 km of cross country skiing trails either, should you tire of the downhill variety.

Snowboarders have a terrain park dedicated specifically to them with small to medium jumps and rails. However, all the trails on Moose Mountain are also open to snowboarders provided they have a leash on their board.

There are many options to ski on Moose Mountain. Adults, children, students, and military personnel (with proper identification) can save substantially when they ride the Moose, as can those who choose to ride the beginners' hill only. Children 6 and under, and seniors over the age of 70, ski or ride for free at all times. Take advantage of the time and weather, because after 1pm, or if the base lodge registers a temperature of 0 degrees Fahrenheit, visitors will receive around $5 off their ticket for the day. Just be sure to bundle up properly to avoid frostbite.

Ski school operates only on Saturdays and Sundays and only offers the lessons itself, while the student must rent equipment separately. Rentals are on a first come, first serve basis, and are available for both shaped skis and snowboards. There is a ski team and children's program in place that have a great reputation with the locals and the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

When the sun sets, and the Moose closes down, head into Fairbanks less than 10 minutes away, and take a taste tour of the many restaurants in this medium sized city. Everything you could want, from homemade ice cream (where else would cold ice cream taste so good?) to bistros, Asian, Italian, and American Grilling to choose from. The University of Alaska at Fairbanks campus is located here, making it a lively town when the lights turn on at night. Check out the brewing companies, cozy bars and pubs, and pool halls. When bedtime comes, choose your lodgings from one of the many hotels, motels, resorts and B&Bs around town.

Comfort and fun is what Moose Mountain is all about. Ride the bus up and carve down the mountain on Moose's powder.
