Our Ski Specialist Says:

Chugach State Park is the 3rd largest state park in America and home to a low key, volunteer run ski area known as Alpenglow at Artic Valley. Since every position at this ski area from the ticket cashiers to the ski patrol is manned by volunteers, Alpenglow can keep its prices down and spirits high because everyone who comes is there for the love of skiing and riding in fresh powder and crisp air.

Located just 10 miles from downtown Anchorage, Alpenglow has a network of twenty-five trails serviced by four chairlifts. This is in addition to their more than 320 acres of pure Alaskan backcountry. With a summit soaring at 3,900 feet, all levels of riders are accommodated and challenged from the complete beginner to the advanced expert. Open on weekends from 10:30am to 1 hour before twilight sets in from Mid-November to Late March, Alpenglow offers amazing sights, from the summit all the way down. As long as they have a leash, snowboarders are free to roam on all trails and rule over the terrain park which has great kickers, rails, and rollers to shred all day long.

There are no lessons or rentals available here, so be sure that you bring along someone to teach you if need be. Bring your own equipment or stop into a rental shop in Anchorage, just a short drive away. Maintained by an army of volunteers that man the mountain as well as the United States Army, Alpenglow shines as one of the best groomed mountains in the area.

The rates are low for any age, but are broken down into the categories of adult (19-59), College student, Youth (7-18), Senior (60-70), and Active Military (with proper identification). Full or half day passes are sold, and children under 6 or seniors over 71 ski or ride free.

Stop into the 2 floor lodge which offers fantastic views of the Chugach Range and Anchorage, and dig into the buffet style meals offered. Après ski and lodging can only be found in Anchorage with its many choices of food and sleeping arrangements. From slow-cooked BBQ to spicy Asian dishes, no one will go hungry. Play a rousing game of pool or relax in a hot tub to soak away those sore muscles, then crawl under the blankets in your hotel, motel, or cabin and wake up to ski another day at Alpenglow.
