Embark on an adventure in the second largest National Forest in the U.S. With wooded mountains, crystal waters, islands and glaciers and the wetlands and birds of the Copper River Delta, Chugach National Forest is a true mecca for outdoor adventurers!
Consisting of one-third rock and moving ice, the diverse landscapes of Chugach National Forest were created by earthquakes and volcanoes and are filled with exceptional icebergs, glaciers and wildlife. Visitors are invited to explore the forest in kayaks, sailboats, ferries and floatplanes to see the 3,500 miles of coastline and towering blue-white glaciers which grind to the sea through spruce forests.
Chugach National Forest's 700,000-acre Copper River delta is a unique wetlands ecosystem and the largest contiguous wetland on the west coast of the U.S., where millions of waterfowl and shorebirds live, and there are more than 40 cabins on trails, lakes, streams, ocean shorelines and alpine areas for visitors to enjoy, both winter and summer. Backcountry travelers can take advantage of 15 developed campgrounds on the Sterling and Seward Highways on the Kenai Peninsula. The 200 miles of trails provide great opportunity for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling and Prince William Sound's cove beaches, island mountains and big rainforest trees provide natural beauty second to none.
The Chugach National Forest is located in south-central Alaska, south and east of Anchorage, around Prince William Sound and the Kenai Peninsula. The Forest headquarters and the Alaska Public Lands Information Center are located in Anchorage.
