Visit the only natural history museum in the Kenai Peninsula! See puffins and other birds up close through remote cameras! With exhibits that range from art to natural history, the Pratt Museum has a diverse collection which promises something fun for everyone.
The Pratt Museum's exhibits focus on art, natural history, native cultures, homesteading, fishing, marine ecology and the Exxon Valdez oil spill. And that's just the beginning. Kids and adults alike will be mesmerized by the Alaskan wildlife dioramas, the salt-water aquaria and the indoor and outdoor exhibits, including the historic Harrington homestead cabin with period furnishings. In fact, the Pratt Museum helped pioneer technology that allows viewing of wildlife through live remote control cameras without disturbing the animals so visitors can watch puffins and other birds on Gull Island, and operate the camera's controls.
Nature lovers will enjoy the great saltwater aquarium which houses local marine life, and if you're curious about all the fishing boats down in the harbor, you can find out about the different types of gear as well as the fish they catch. There's also a small botanical garden outside to help you learn to identify all the local wildflowers, and a forest trail explores the area's ecology. And that's not all: several days throughout the year the Pratt Museum is open for special seasonal celebrations and activities that involve the whole family, the most popular free day being the Stocking Stuffer on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. To get to the Pratt Museum from Pioneer Avenue, turn north onto Bartlett Street. The museum is 1/2 block up on the left hand side.
The Pratt Museum is dedicated to the process of education by exploring the natural environment and human experience relative to the Kachemak Bay region of Alaska and its place in the world. The Museum seeks to inspire self-reflection and dialogue in its community and visitors through exhibitions, programs, and collections in the arts, sciences and humanities.
