Things to do / Travel Guide
It's not as cold as you might have thought in this region, especially along the coast, which is surprisingly mild, due to the maritime climate and the protection of the area by the Chugach Mountains. Inland, however, the weather is more extreme. Generally, throughout the region, winters are windy, snowy, and freezing cold. Spring is the driest season with warmer days and cooler nights. The summer temperatures are perfect, for mosquitoes that is, so watch out! Approximately two-thirds of the time, the weather is cloudy or rainy. Come the fall, however, the skies become a lot sunnier and temperatures are still relatively warm during the days, but nights are chilly.
In terms of when to visit weather-wise, in the winter you'll have excellent conditions for all sorts of winter recreational activities and for seeing the Aurora Borealis. While the mosquitoes buzz around aplenty during the summer, it's also a good time for humans to be in the region, as the days are incredibly long, with 24 hours of daylight during the summer solstice. Though temperatures drop come October, it's also a good time to visit, with brilliantly colored foliage and pretty much no precipitation until late in the month.
