The Alaska SeaLife Center offers an unrivaled, up-close and personal experience with Gulf of Alaska marine wildlife
A rugged, “early Alaska” feel is typical of the Alaska Railroad and Kenai region, and this feel extends to the factories it boasts in the Anchorage area. Whether taking a factory tour of the Alaska Mint, where you can see gigantic gold nuggets, or the Musk Ox Farm, where you can watch the Arctic's oldest living species graze in their natural habitat, visitors to this region will be transported back to a pioneer-style era.
Factory Tour of the Alaska Mint in Anchorage
Located in the heart of downtown Anchorage, visitors ages 18 and up can take a free self-guided tour of the Alaska Mint, where you'll witness the minting process in progress. In addition to seeing giant gold nuggets and a 10-foot high gold scale, you can purchase some beautiful medallions and other custom-made trinkets and jewelry pieces from the site's gift shop. Don't expect to walk away with any free samples though.
Factory Tour of the Musk Ox Farm North of Anchorage
For a truly Alaskan experience, visit the Musk Ox Farm, in Palmer, north of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway, where you'll see domesticated cows, bulls, and newborn calves. On the free behind-the-scenes tour, you'll be able to observe and photograph these animals at close range. You'll also learn about the Musk Ox Project, which promotes the use of qiviut (the fine under-wool of the musk ox) as the basis of an Arctic native textile industry.
Behind-the-scenes and factory tours are typically family-friendly activities good for a short and interesting diversion from a region's mainstream tourist activities. Both factory tours in this region are free, but note that some tours have irregular hours and admission restrictions. Click on the individual icons for more practical information.
