Alaskan Adventure Travel in Denali and the Alaskan Wilderness
Just being in the Alaskan Wilderness qualifies and an adventure vacation and access to the interior is relatively easy from the main stops on the Alaskan travel route – Seward, Anchorage, Denali and Fairbanks. Covering that route on the Alaska Railroad is a very scenic part of the trip.
Multi-day backpacking trips into the Denali backcountry is a great opportunity for hiking in the tundra and lowland forests of the massive park. You can do it on your own, arranging permits at the visitors center or join an organized outing. True adventurers should note that a Mount McKinley climb is a three week venture requiring mountaineering skills.
Class IV and V Rafting in the Alaskan Interior
An Alaskan rafting adventure covers all bases – some of the wildest rapids imaginable, wildlife, including bears, moose, caribou and bald eagles, steep canyons, glacier views and maybe even a distant peek at Mt. McKinley. Some of the more accessible rivers served by local outfitters are:
- Six Mile Creek in the Chugach National Forest, near Hope, Alaska
- Matanuska River, east of Palmer, Alaska
- Talkeetna River, 50 miles from Denali for multi-day rafting trips
Not quite as rough (“only” class III), the Nenana River, is located near the Denali Park entrance and will definitely qualify this trip as an adventure vacation.
