Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:
This is definitely some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the world. See Alaskan glaciers, pristine waters and remote forests, all from the comfort of a luxury cruise liner. Roughly half of all the tourists that come to Alaska each year arrive or depart on a cruise ship. These cruise ships, spanning the price and size spectrum make their way past miles of wilderness and massive glaciers and call in the ports of Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and others.
The cruise provides access to the towns of the Alaska Panhandle, where local culture and natural beauty are ready for exploration. Relaxing on your deck chair, you will see Wrangell-St. Elias and Glacier Bay National Parks passing you by. Wrangell-St. Elias is also classified as UNESO World Heritage Site and in these two parks you'll see massive icebergs and the 40-story Hubbard Glacier. Snow-capped mountains, beautiful fjords, massive glaciers and incredible wildlife from bears to moose to whales will be constant sights as you look out from the deck of the ship.
The main cruises typically last a week and make 2 to 4 port calls. The main points of origin are Seattle and Vancouver. Some cruises return to the point of origin, others dock in Seward, with access to Anchorage and points further north. Several smaller cruise ships have longer more varied routes with access to points further east as well as stop-overs in other Alaskan Panhandle ports.
