In 1887 the Reverend Dr. Sheldon Jackson donated the first artifacts to the museum established in his name. He and the members of the Alaska Society of Natural History and Ethnology collected close to 5,000 objects by 1911 when the organization was disbanded. In 1984 the State of Alaska purchased the museum and collections from Sheldon Jackson College and decided to focus the scope of collections on Alaska Native materials. At present the museum has 5,357 objects from the Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Aleut, Alutiiq, Yup'ik, Inupiat and Athabascan peoples of Alaska.
