Things to do / Travel Guide

The Alaska Panhandle has a temperate marine climate, characterized by year-round infrequent but heavy precipitation, mostly in the form of rain. The fair-weathered summers start out quite dry but humidity increases progressively, causing most midsummer days to be overcast and/or rainy. Falls are chilly with unrelenting wind and rain. Winter temperatures, despite the northern latitude, are cold, but not as cold as you might imagine. Snowfalls generally melt rapidly due to the frequent rainstorms. Springs are mostly pleasant and relatively dry, although windy, and rainy weather isn't unheard of.

Summers are hands-down the best time to visit Alaska. Trip planning is made easier with highs typically in the mid-60s for four long months. This season is an excellent time to take a cruise through the waters of the Alaska Panhandle.
