Things to do / Travel Guide
Time for a luxury cruise - this time not to the Caribbean, and not to Mediterranean, nor to Scandinavia. The newest premier cruise destination is none other than the Alaska Panhandle, with stops at wonders such as Misty Fjords National Monument - called the Yosemite of the North, Glacier Bay National Park, and Juneau - one of the most unique and picturesque capital cities in the U.S.
Luxurious Activities around Juneau
Many of the cruise stops offer the opportunity to take awesome helicopter rides right up to the attractions. Consider a flight up to and through the “canals” of Misty Fjords, where you can check out New Eddystone Rock, a gigantic pillar of basalt rearing out of the water. In Glacier Bay a ride yields views of icebergs being born: slowly slowly they separate themselves from their mother, the glacier, until they float away free.
Additional helicopter “flightseeing” tours await departing from Juneau. The Juneau Icefield is a sight to behold, home of almost 20 independent glaciers, some almost 4,000 feet deep. Mendenhall Glacier, in the vicinity, is one of the most commonly-visited glaciers in the world.
Lest you think the luxury cruises reaching the Alaska Panhandle might be somewhat below par versus those reaching other luxury destinations, here's a taste of what to expect on Princess Cruises Alaska, the region's premier cruise line: a casino, a day spa and a beauty salon, a night club and a movie theater, a number of restaurants and lounges, 24-hour room service, an art gallery, and more. It's like a traveling luxury hotel. All aboard!
Luxurious Dining in Juneau
Juneau itself boasts some excellent seafood restaurants. Disembark and head to Twisted Fish Co. Alaskan Grill; it just might serve the tastiest - and the freshest - salmon ever to reach your mouth. Try the halibut as well. The restaurant boasts a wine list of over 30 wines, to leave your palate in a good state as you return to the mother ship.
