Lodging in the Alaska Panhandle is a mixed bag, to be sure. Most tourist-class properties are quite decent, both in accommodations and cost, with rooms starting at around $55 per night. There are also a number of great bed and breakfast establishments (B&Bs) that come in under $90 per night. Visitors can also book quaint inns, and some pretty nice resorts, like Salmon Falls Resort in Ketchikan or the Baranof Wilderness Lodge, which usually come with a higher price tag, but are well worth the cost if you're looking for more luxurious accommodations in the region.
The important thing to remember when looking for lodging in the Alaska Panhandle is location. In general, most lodging establishments in the region are located in the cities, like Juneau, Ketchikan, Haines, Wrangell, and Skagway. Since the region is so vast and since its attractions are so spread out, it's critical to choose your location and hotel wisely when deciding on your itinerary.
While your typical hotel accommodation is usually land-based, the most popular “hotels” in the Alaska Panhandle are the cruise ships the pass through the region. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the Panhandle each year, taking in the attractions by day and returning to their ships for some good food, entertainment, and lodging at night. The following morning, the “hotel” is typically close to the next town on the cruise itinerary.
