Things to do / Travel Guide
Thrill-seekers will love the Alaska Panhandle. Its rugged and rough terrain allows for some outstanding options in the realm of adventure travel. For example, there are opportunities for glacier trekking, ziplining, and dog sledding that are sure to get your heart pumping.
Glacier Trekking
Glacier treks are perfect for those adventurous souls with little or no mountaineering experience, but who wish to experience the thrill of hiking atop a magnificent glacier. Enjoy an informative and in-depth glacier experience with a knowledgeable guide. The three treks offered are suitable for people of almost any level of physical ability. The guiding company provides all necessary mountaineering gear for each level of trekking. Each trip also includes about 30 minutes of spectacular helicopter flight time to transport you to and from the glacier. See wildlife, towering mountain peaks, glaciers, rivers, lakes, and streams while en route.
Depending on the trek level, different amounts of physical activity will be required, and different amounts of time will be spent on the glacier - anywhere from 2-5 hours. This tour is expensive - starting at $300 and up, so make sure it's your “thing” before booking!
Zip Lining
Visitors can get a real bird's-eye view of an Alaskan rainforest with this high-adrenaline sport that sends people zipping from tree to tree tethered to a series of high-wire cables.
Following a network of suspended rope bridges and connecting zip lines stretching over three-fourths of a mile at the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary near Ketchikan is the ideal way to introduce you to this thrill-a-second activity.
Dog Sledding Tour
This is a fantastic and unique way to see the majestic beauty of the Alaska Panhandle. Mushing is the name of this game, so be prepared to have an eager team of beautiful Alaskan Huskies whisk you past magnificent mountains, ancient and giant glaciers, and more! These unique, but expensive, tours start in Skagway and Juneau, and run from May through mid-September. The tour lasts about 3½ hours and costs anywhere from $400-$450.
