Our Nature Nut Says:

Above and within the frigid Arctic Circle lies one of the country's most wild, secluded, and pristine National Parks. The enormous 8.4 million-acre Gates of the Arctic is situated within the Brooks Range of mountains and contains six wild and scenic rivers, unbridled wilderness, and, unlike most other National Parks, 10 small communities living within the park's boundaries.
For a wild outdoor experience, hike the grand mountains and glaciers and backpack across the vast open expanses. You'll need to stay on your toes at all times, in order to avoid a run-in with a grizzly or black bear.
The park is completely undeveloped and lacks all facilities, basic or otherwise. Visitors MUST be completely self-sufficient, which means bringing enough extra food and water to last several days.

From Gates Of The Arctic National Park & Preserve - Alaska:

Congress has reserved a vast and essentially untouched area of superlative natural beauty and exceptional scientific value - a maze of glaciated valleys and gaunt, rugged mountains covered with boreal forest and arctic tundra vegetation, cut by wild rivers.
