Things to do / Travel Guide
One thing's for sure in this region: It doesn't get much colder than this! Sparsely inhabited, the weather up in this part of Alaska simply wasn't meant for human life to thrive in. Nicknamed the “artic desert,” there's actually minimal precipitation, but cold to freezing weather is present year round. High winds, snowfall, and freezing temperatures are possible every month of the year. Winters in particular are long and severe with strong winds and freezing temperatures.
The best time to visit is in the relatively short “summer season” from late May until late August, when the mercury rises somewhat consistently over freezing. While the sun doesn't ever set from May 10th-August 2nd, thunderstorms aren't uncommon. On the flip side, the sun doesn't rise over the horizon from November 18th-January 24th.
