Rocky Mountain Road Trip Planner While the Rocky Mountain States is the rather generic term that applies to the states between the Midwest and the West Coast, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana have more than the Rockies. But lets start with the famous mountains, some reaching elevations of over 14,000 feet. A convenient place for starting our Rocky Mountain road trip planner is in Denver, at the base of the Front Range.
If you flew into Denver in the winter you probably have skis with you and are headed west to the Colorado ski resort towns. Vail and Breckenridge are about two hours away, Aspen, about four. During other seasons, popular road trips from Denver include short drives to Boulder, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park or south to Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak and Boulder.
Longer road trips include trips crossing the Rockies west to Northern Utah and Salt Lake City, or to the parks of Southern Utah. The long drive to Moab, Utah will be rewarded by the natural beauty of Arches, Bryce and Zion National Parks. Rather than return to Denver, consider a visit to the Grand Canyon eventually ending the road trip in Las Vegas. If the trip is during the warmer months, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon may be a better choice. It is less crowded and more convenient coming from the Utah parks. Vacationers may also choose to head north out of Denver to Cheyenne, Wyoming, Yellowstone and the Big Sky Country of Montana.
Rocky Mountain Tourist AttractionsTourist Attractions in the Rocky Mountains mean nature, with a few quaint mining towns along the way. During the winter it is all about ski. September and October are more than about just waiting for the snow to fall and the slopes open – they are prime months for Fall Foliage. Colorado residents like to think that their fall foliage show beats the one in Vermont. Let’s just agree that the Colorado fall experience is different. Golden aspens, snow-capped mountains, evergreen trees as a backdrop and rugged mining town is what autumn us about in the Rockies.
While the National Parks of the Rocky Mountain states are among the most visited in the United States, there are hiking, biking, fishing, camping and rafting spots all over the region.
Rocky Mountain Vacation Spots When planning a Rocky Mountain vacation you will need to consider what kind of vacation spot are you looking for. Do you prefer galleries and gourmet food or fishing and camping? Do you want to see celebrities or elk or both?
The Colorado resort towns of Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and Telluride are synonymous with luxury. The popular vacation spots in Montana and Wyoming are often dude ranches, a different experience from the spas of Vail. Vacation spots in Idaho are more low key. You choose.
