Mid Atlantic Road Trip Planner The Mid Atlantic region of the United States is full of very popular tourist attractions, including Washington, DC, New York, Philadelphia, Hershey and the Amish Country in Pennsylvania. Plan a Mid Atlantic road trip to explore some places along the way and even some out of the way. Extend a New York to Washington road trip to include Eastern Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Maryland and continue to the historic attractions of Virginia south of DC. If you are a fan of American history and looking for some prime vacation spots, the coastal areas and beaches of Maryland and Virginia will give you some of both. Interstate highways crisscross the area and make access to the areas attractions quite simple and quick. Just make sure to miss the rush hours – 9am is not a good time to explore the Lincoln Tunnel.
New York Vacation Spots and Road Trip PlannerEven New Yorkers don’t like to admit there is a whole lot of New York State beyond the Bronx. While anything an hour or so past the Westchester suburbs are called “upstate”, there is still about 10 hours of road left until you hit Canada. So, spend a few days in the Catskills and tour the Hudson Valley, but keep on going to the vacation spots of Upstate New York, including Niagara Falls, Lake George, the Thousand Islands, the Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks. If you live anywhere near the east coast, consider splitting this aggressive plan into several trips.
One of the most popular New York road trips is the New York City to Niagara Falls route. You can blast through the 400 miles on the Thruway (I-87, I-90), the Quickway (17) or on the Interstates via New Jersey and Pennsylvania or you can spend a few days and enjoy the Finger Lakes along the way. And by enjoy we mean the tourist attractions as well as the wineries and fine dining.
Pennsylvania Tourist AttractionsThe popular destinations in Pennsylvania are pretty much grouped in two parts of the states. The tourist attractions of Eastern Pennsylvania include the Poconos to the north and the area around and west of Philadelphia. The Pocono mountains are a favorite retreat for East Coast romantic couples as well as summer campers. The Poconos also have the best skiing between New York City and Colorado.
Philadephia has more than its share of historic attractions and families often travel to Hershey and the area around Lancaster. Further west, Gettysburg is one of the most significant historic sites in the country. From there its not much further (under 2 hours) to Washington, DC.
Across the state, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a good vacation spot that is often overlooked. The city makes a pleasant base for exploring Southwestern Pennsylvania with its hills, three rivers and abundant parkland. Don’t miss Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and try and get out on the Yough. In case you were wondering – that would be whitewater rafting on the class V rapids of the Youghiogheny River.
