Family Vacation Ideas for Key West, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami Beach, Southern Florida

Things to do / Travel Guide

Florida Keys Family Vacation Spots

If your child is a “little fish,” then all the beaches and water activities will make their day. Snorkeling activities, especially in the Keys, are great for families. Engaging in any combination of water-based activities like snorkeling, pleasure boating, and kayaking, should make for very happy children.

Miami Family Vacation Ideas

If your kids are animal lovers, then they will love attractions like Flamingo Gardens in Broward County and the Miami Metrozoo. For another great animal thrill, take your child to Dolphin World in the Keys to swim with the dolphins (you can swim too).
You can also take them to see sea animals perform at the Theater of the Sea, also in the Keys. How about watching alligator wrestling in the Everglades? Prices for these activities range from moderate to expensive.

If your kids prefer some video games and other recreation activities, then Boomers in Boca Raton is the place to go. Besides video games and other games, there are also prizes, miniature golf, and go karts to occupy the tykes and teens. Dining-wise, many restaurants offer special children's menus, which will ensure happy youngsters at the table with mom and dad.

Everglades Family Vacation Spots

Give the kids a vacation they'll never forget by spending a few days at the Everglades National Park. The best way to tour the area is by air-boat. Your kids will get spot-on views of Great Blue Herons, owls, alligators, and other wildlife native to the 'glades. "The River of Grass" will be of particular interest to the family.

Before you leave the Everglades National Park, make sure you stop by the Shark Valley Visitor Center. This is considered the most family-friendly visitor center. You'll find exhibits here of alligators and birds, as well as a one-mile trail build with kids in mind, the Bobcat Boardwalk.

The Florida Everglades is also home to the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. Here kids and adults alike can learn about the rich history of the Everglades' Seminole Indians. There's also a swamp safari with an alligator show, swamp critter show, and a cool water café.

Ft. Lauderdale Family Vacation Ideas

Ft. Lauderdale is all about beaches, but if you've got your family with you, you'll want to make sure you find a family-friendly, lifeguard attended, clean beach. We recommend checking out Deerfield Beach, South Beach Park, and Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. The beaches by Lauderdale-by-the-Sea are also great for families who want to divide their time between beach activities and hanging out on this cool promenade.

Another option for families who want to stay close to the water is to head out to sea on a glass-bottom boat. These boat rides generally last about 2.5 hours and glide over crystal clear reefs. Old kids can enjoy snorkeling in the tropical fish-filled waters and non-snorkeling family members can just sit back and enjoy the fresh air and the stunning scenery.

Butterfly World is our non-water-related family recommendation. This colorful paradise is filled with fluttering butterflies that will flit and fly all around you and your children. The educational component of the center, Lab Encounter, offers visitors of all ages with an exhibit of how butterflies morph from egg to larva to caterpillar to cocoon, and then finally to butterfly.
