Things to do / Travel Guide
As northeast Florida and the Panhandle gets more and more built up with tourist-industry infrastructure, the artsy follow. Most of the destinations along the Emerald Coast and, on the other side of the state, all of the beaches along the barrier island east of Jacksonville, have great locations for shopping. You'll find outdoor shopping villages, beach-ware, and boutiques and galleries that are fun for everyone.
Because many of these communities on the Emerald Coast and Jacksonville Beach were built only recently, and with tourists in mind, often the shopping districts are quite accessible and fun. In Seaside, on the Emerald Coast, for example, the art galleries are located in the complex around the city's amphitheater and Central Square. For great shopping in Destin, go to the Harborwalk on Route 98 East, and in Fort Walton Beach go to Main Street, otherwise known as Southeast Miracle Strip Parkway. In Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Neptune Beach, you'll find boutiques galore, plus book and jewelry stores, in the individual town centers.
If you make it over to Cedar Key, there's a unique Florida shopping experience waiting for you. The shops, mostly but not exclusively located along Dock Street, sell shells, jewelry, children's toys, and antiques, all with a tropical twist. You can also peruse the art galleries, which number around a dozen. The prices for all items are very reasonable.
Going to flea markets is something of a local pastime, and you find the biggest of these in St. Augustine, Crystal River, Homosassa, Tallahassee, and Panama City. There are lots in Jacksonville. As a tourist, you'll be interested in the many antiques and collectibles you can get for cheap.
