New York City is a true sports mecca. The only metropolitan area in the United States with two teams in each of the country's four major sports, the 8 million or so residents can be counted on to fill up the city's many stadiums and arenas.
Outdoor Sports Stadiums in New York City
Baseball is arguably the most popular sport in New York City, with $252-million-man Alex Rodriguez's Yankees and the cross-town Mets drawing crowds to Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium each season. Though physically located in New Jersey, Giants Stadium plays host to both of New York's NFL franchises, the Jets and the Giants. In the heart of Manhattan lies Madison Square Garden, home to the NBA's Knicks and the NHL's Rangers. The NBA's Nets and the NHL's Devils and Islanders also have their main spectator bases in New York City.
Indoor Sports Stadiums in New York City
Madison Square Garden, or “The Garden,” as it is more affectionately called by locals, is also the unofficial “home” of World Wrestling Entertainment, a premier boxing venue, and the site of the annual NIT college basketball tournament championship. The Winged Foot Golf Club is playing host to the 2006 U.S. Golf Open, while its U.S. Tennis Open counterpart takes place in Flushing Meadows each year. Thoroughbred racing fans flock to Aqueduct and the Meadowlands Racetrack to see the yearlings, fillies, and stallions strut their stuff down the stretch. And finally, the annual New York City Marathon, which attracts world-class runners, is one of the most well-known long-distance races in the world.
