Every month has its special events in New York City, so no matter what time of year you plan your visit the Big Apple, something special is going on.
January Events in New York City
The Chinese New Year is celebrated over two weeks, usually in the second half of January. An outstanding feature of the celebration is a parade with colorful paper-dragons that snakes its way through Chinatown.
February Events in New York City
Take advantage of the drastically-lowered rates at some of New York City's best restaurants during New York City Restaurant Week, each February. This is the perfect opportunity to guiltlessly eat at that special eatery that would otherwise be above your budget.
March Events in New York City
The annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Manhattan on March 17th is an inspired event not to be missed. Watching it go up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 86th Street, you can don green, down a Guinness, and celebrate with the locals.
April Events in New York City
Manhattan's annual Easter Parade is unique in that, instead of floats, a great mass of people dressed up in their flamboyant best all walk up Fifth Avenue from 49th Street to 57th Street.
The annual New York International Auto Show is one of the biggest auto shows of the world, showcasing the flagship models of more than 43 manufacturers. Futuristic and fanciful concept cars are on display in abundance at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. You should call in advance to find out when in April the show will be taking place.
The New York Antiques & Fine Art Fair takes place each April at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in Lincoln Square. Featuring all kinds of artifacts and goods, including paintings, sculptures, posters, lamps, chandeliers, and jewelry, attending the fair is a fun experience for any culture or art connoisseur.
May Events in New York City
The annual Ninth Avenue International Food Festival debuted in May, 1973, and it draws more than 1 million people a year. Located along 20 streets in Hell's Kitchen, it features foods from every cuisine style represented in New York City, from Argentinean to Vietnamese.
The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, which was started in the early 1930s by Jackson Pollock, takes place in Greenwich Village's Washington Square on Memorial Day weekend and again on the following weekend. Today it features the art of over 200 eclectic artists and draws upwards of 200,000 people a year.
June Events in New York City
The Metropolitan Opera in the Parks is an event that takes place each June in the parks all over New York City. Generally two different operas are performed once each in each park. As for the Shakespeare in the Park event, where the Bard's plays are performed in public for free, this takes place in Central Park for a good portion of June and has been a crowd favorite for more than 50 years.
July Events in New York City
July 4th in the Big Apple is an unforgettable experience, with celebrations all over the city. Perhaps the biggest events are organized by Macy's. Celebratory events also take place at the South Street Seaport, and fireworks displays are spectacular when seen from the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.
The Lincoln Center Festival annually showcases music, dance, opera, and theater. These modern and ancient genre-defying works originate from many different places around the world.
August Events in New York City
Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors is a festival taking place throughout the month of August celebrating the spirit of the blues, and marking its vitality. Blues acts come from all over the globe to play in this festival.
September Events in New York City
The Feast of San Gennaro takes place the middle of September each year, commemorating the patron saint of Naples, Italy. The main events unfold on Mulberry Street in Little Italy. On the last day of the Feast there is a special procession and parade with floats and a marching band.
The New York City Underground Comedy Festival features over 200 events taking place in all five boroughs. It is a showcase for both new and established comedic talent and a great and affordable way to get some good laughs.
October Events in New York City
The Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, on Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 21st Street, is the largest public Halloween parade in the U.S. Each October 31st, you can sit back and admire the fantastic costumes, or join in the parade yourself if you so desire.
November Events in New York City
The New York Chocolate Show is the largest chocolate festival in the United States. Lasting for several days at the Metropolitan Pavilion, it offers demonstrations by top chocolate makers, lots of samples, more than 60 different brands, and other goodies.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has been an annual New York City tradition since the 1920s. Its memorable floats and balloons are practically synonymous with Thanksgiving Day and the beginning of the holiday season. The parade starts by traveling along Central Park's periphery, makes its way onto Broadway, into Times Square, and finally towards the Macy's building.
December Events in New York City
The annual Kwanzaa Festival, featuring African food, culture, and traditions, is held at the Jacob Javits Center each December.
The legendary celebration at Times Square on New Year's Eve reaches its peak when the famous ball drops at exactly midnight. Some 700,000 people pack into the square and surrounding areas on an average year.
