Romantic Vacation Getaways in Hawaiian Islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai

Things to do / Travel Guide

If you are seeking out the perfect venue for romance, look no further than the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai. Sunset walks on beaches too beautiful to describe with words, lush tropical rainforests, cascading waterfalls with seductive pools, exquisite hotels, and Polynesian hospitality are all awaiting your arrival. The Hawaiian Islands have always had a certain mystique about them that draws people to their shores. If you are a honeymooner or just a couple looking for romance, Maui, Molokai, and Lanai are calling to you!

Romantic Lodging in Maui, Molokai, and Lanai

One of the top romantic resorts is the Hotel Hana-Maui and Honua Spa at the end of the spectacular Road to Hana.
This classic establishment has a 60 year history, and resides on the undeveloped east coast of Maui on 66 gorgeous acres of a 4,000-acre ranch. The rooms are cottage-style and nestled among manicured gardens; it feels closer to an old-fashioned Hawaiian plantation than a resort.

If it's total opulence you seek in your quest for a romantic stay, look no further than the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. A quick glance at the spectacular grounds tells you this is someplace special. That's even before you see your posh room and the other nicely appointed public areas! All guest rooms and suites have comfortable seating, a large marble bathroom and a large, furnished lanai (veranda).

For an even more secluded choice, consider the Four Seasons Resort Lana'i, Manele Bay on the almost private island of Lanai. This gorgeous hotel is set on elevated lava bluffs along Lanai's southern coast. Overlooking Hulopoe Beach, this place is isolated so guests actually feel like they're on a tropical island, miles from everything - because they are! With a large, dolphin-populated beach and a Jack Nicklaus-designed oceanfront golf course, the emphasis is on total relaxation and romance.

On Maui, expensive need not be a synonym for romantic. While in the main resort areas, it is natural for the upscale resorts to be better-geared to romance, in upcountry Maui a simple B&B, a secluded cottage, or an historic small inn may do the trick.

Romantic Dining in Maui, Molokai, and Lanai

Any romantic will tell you that fine food is an essential element of a romance-themed vacation. To be sure, on Maui there are some special places to dine. Seafood is king here, and a whole genre of cuisine known as Hawaiian Regional Cuisine has sprung up in recent years, much to the delight and benefit of restaurant patrons.

Roy's Kahana Bar & Grill is a gem from acclaimed Chef Roy Yamaguchi. As his first foray into Maui, he took special care to ensure vacationers are treated to a meal they won't forget. Fresh seafood and other dishes are prepared to exacting standards, with gorgeous plating and a flair for the dramatic. How romantic?!

Nick's Fish Market Maui is located on the grounds of the legendary Kei Lani Resort. Guests are surrounded by beauty and grace as they dine on delicious delectables from the talented chef Kyle Yonashiro. The romantic Mediterranean décor is in evidence with its rich earth tones, which nicely compliment the curved white walls. Vine-covered trellises and lights add charm, and the view of the ocean is enchanting.

And last, but not least, in Maui sits Mama's Fish House. This is a “can't miss” restaurant for its beautiful décor, great ocean views and, of course, the unbelievable food. Since 1973, the Christensen family has been treating guests to the finest fresh Pacific seafood, served beautifully plated by waiters and waitresses who know how to make it all come together and give you and your significant other a romantic night to remember.

Romantic Excursions on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai

What makes the Hawaiian Islands so naturally special are their stunning tropical beauty. Romance seekers will be well served to take advantage of this, and on Maui that means a drive on the Road to Hana. This legendary 53-mile winding, mountainous drive passes pineapple fields, waterfalls, black-sand beaches and lush tropical forest that make those brochure pictures pale in comparison.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Hawaiian vacation, much less a romantic one, if you didn't take moonlit walks on beautiful beaches. There are obviously plenty of choices, but we'll tip you off to a few good ones and you can take it from there. Kaanapali Beach is typical of Maui beaches - white sand and gentle surf. Wailea Beach is another good choice, with white sand and a gentle bay to keep the surf down. La Perouse Bay Beach is a really nice remote and quiet beach, with gentle surf, great expanses of wide white sand, and lots of tropical foliage. And, no need to wait for dark - these islands' beaches make the perfect spots for viewing the famous and romantic Hawaiian sunsets. For the more adventurous romantic - try sunset atop Haleakala.

Lahina is a great place to just spend an afternoon just walking through. Here you'll find great shops, art galleries and boutiques, bars, restaurants, and the main marina. Where you may be interested in a sunset dinner cruise. How romantic is that? Gently cruise off the coast of Maui, live music playing on deck, with a cocktail or two and a great meal.

One last suggestion for romance - the Luau! There are a number of good choices here, as most of the bigger resorts offer a luau. You can expect to see a good representation of the Hawaiian culture with traditional costumes, fire and hula dances, some music, and a great traditional Hawaiian meal of roast pig, poi (a local dish made from Taro root), and many other goodies. Attending at least one luau during your stay is an absolute must for any romantic!

All in all, the tropical islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai offer many options toward ensuring your stay is a romantic getaway you'll never forget. Aloha!
