Things to do / Travel Guide
For those of you who are “shop-o-holics,” the Maine Coast is the place for you. Aside from the large malls with all the trademark name-brand anchor shops which are readily available throughout the region, it's the out of the way boutiques and bric-a-brac shops that really grab you here. Everything from nautical-themed specialty stores to a virtual cornucopia of antique shops are within a stone's throw from just about anywhere you happen to be in the region. Think quaint. Art galleries and small specialty shops are the rule here.
A good example of such shopping is found in the Lighthouse Depot, in Wells. As the name implies, it's all about the lighthouse - from T-shirts to statues. Also, shoppers will delight in the fresh food variety found at the Portland Public Market, where 35 local vendors display fresh produce and other local delicacies. Another great place to shop is at Len Libby's Candies. Can you say yum? Probably not with your mouth full, you can't! She's in Scarborough, just outside Portland. However, one of the best shopping excursions is one you make up yourself. All through the back roads of the Maine Coast, visitors can find a myriad of small boutiques and antique shops. Heck, just fire up the ol' horseless buggy (a.k.a., your car) and head on down the road a piece. You just might find that certain something you've been looking for all your life - or a T-shirt!
And of course there's the headquarters of L.L. Bean. Known to millions from their mail-order catalogs, this giant supplier of outdoor gear and apparel is based out of Freeport. It is here that the company's flagship store sits, right on Main Street, along with dozens of other outlet stores, attracting hundreds of thousands of shoppers each year. One of the store's unique draws is that it is open around the clock, every day of the year, so you can get that fishing line at noon or midnight, whatever your convenience. In addition to its flagship store, the company also maintains another two stores in the region, in Portland and Ellsworth, which are also open 24/7.
