Things to do / Travel Guide
Whether you've just won a fortune at the Atlantic City casinos or you've saved your hard-earned money for a splurge, you won't leave the Jersey Shore shopping districts empty-handed. From antique districts and auctions, flea markets, and farmers markets, to posh oceanfront shopping and trendy boutiques, the Jersey Shore has well-anticipated the gamut of consumer cravings.
Antique Shopping in the Jersey Shore
While just about every Jersey Shore community has its own unique antique shop, Keyport's Historic Antique District, particularly Front Street, Broad Street, and Main Street, will allow you to stay by the bay while looking for your favorite collectors' items. Red Bank Antique Center, in Red Bank, features three buildings with over 150 antique dealers, and Point Pleasant Antique Emporium in Point Pleasant Beach, has more than 125 antique dealers in a single building. Drive up and down Bay Avenue and Trenton Avenue and you will find plenty of small antique boutiques.
Auctions in the Jersey Shore
Auctioneers have the ability to jazz up even the blandest of shopping excursions. From April-November, farmers sell their produce at the Vineland Produce Auction, in Vineland. Open every day but Sunday, the auction is one of the biggest produce auctions in the east. And over 1,000 vendors head to the year-round flea market-style Englishtown Auction in Englishtown. Englishtown Auction is open on weekends year-round. Their slogan is “We have it all from A to Z,” and you can, in fact, purchase anything from action figures to necklaces to rotisserie chickens to ukuleles to zucchinis, as well as just about everything in-between.
Markets in the Jersey Shore
Whether you are in the market for Edwardian jewelry, Carnival Glass, Noritake China, or just a plain old banana, the Jersey Shore's farmers' and flea markets just might have what you are looking for. Many Jersey Shore towns have their own farmers markets open for the duration of the summer as well as other times during the year. Atlantic City, Cape May, Ocean City, and Historic Cold Spring Village, for instance, have noteworthy markets. Delicious Orchards, off of Route 34 in Monmouth County, is a local favorite for fresh produce, homemade baked delights, and artisan cheeses. Stop by in the fall for fresh apple cider and pie. If you can't make it in the fall, you needn't worry as Delicious Orchards is open year-round, every Tuesday-Sunday. If you like the idea of picking your own produce, Battleview Orchards on Wemrock Road, near Monmouth Battlefield State Park, is a good choice. Depending on the season, apples (hundreds of acres), cherries, pumpkins, nectarines, and peaches are available for pay-by-the-pound picking. Battleview Orchards is open from May-October.
Sizeable flea markets are located in Lakewood, Farmingdale, Howell, and Barnegat. While the Route 70 Flea Market in Lakewood, the Howell Flea Market on Route 9 in Howell, and the Collingswood Flea Market in Farmingdale are open on weekends year-round, the Barnegat Flea and Craft Market is open just three days each year (June 6th, June 27th, and August 24th).
Unique Shopping Districts in the Jersey Shore
From picturesque boardwalk strips to quaint historic villages and oceanfront boutiques, throughout the Jersey Shore you will find a wide variety of shopping districts. Pier Village, at Long Branch, is a beautifully-designed, upscale oceanfront shopping area with more than 30 privately-owned specialty stores.
The West End area of Long Beach offers a nice selection of trendy boutiques and upscale fashion near Monmouth University campus. You might be able to cook up a nice deal in Asbury Park as you walk along Cookman Avenue for a selection of interesting shops. Quaint, picturesque family-owned shops line Main Avenue in Ocean Grove and in Spring Lake, where you can pick up a souvenir of the town's Irish heritage at the Third Avenue Irish Centre. Downtown Red Bank is considered one of the hippest Jersey Shore shopping districts - trendy boutiques and art galleries abound.
In Beach Haven, stop off at the Bay Village and Schooner's Wharf, which features more than 40 unique shops. Washington Street Mall, in Cape May, is a historic district just one block from the Atlantic Ocean that is perfect for pedestrian browsing and window-shopping in the area's mom-and-pop boutiques.
Victorious gamblers looking to jettison their earnings have made Atlantic City a shopper's seventh heaven. Walk up and down the boardwalk and you'll find everything from high-end brand names to knick-knack souvenir and saltwater taffy shops. The Pier at Caesars is a favorite for luxury shopping and the Shops on Ocean One is the only shopping center actually built over the Atlantic Ocean.
