Things to do / Travel Guide
It's a fairly easy task to point out the romantic attributes of the Hawaii's Big Island. Magnificent scenery, spectacular beaches, lush tropical foliage, a seething volcano, and a collection of outstanding resorts make the region near impossible to beat. And, every day you can enjoy a world-class Hawaiian sunset from the beach, on a sunset dinner cruise, or even from your hotel balcony. Pay attention as the sun sinks below the horizon; you may see the “green flash.”
Romantic Accommodations on Hawaii's Big Island
So where to start? Laying the foundation to a romantically-themed visit to Hawaii's Big Island begins with your home away from home - the lodging. There are hundreds of excellent choices, but we'll just highlight a few of the really special ones and you can take it from there.
One of the real gems of the area is the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Guests can take long strolls through spectacularly-landscaped grounds, and swim in a pool with bridges, waterfalls, hidden coves with hot tubs, and more. The resort even has its own dolphin habitat and offers guests a variety of encounter options.
A more intimate, romantic gem, with only 75 rooms, is the Kona Village Resort. Rated as one of the world's top romantic resorts, it has charm to spare. Guest rooms are actually thatched-hut hales, with a nice comfortable bed and original Hawaiian art. Primitive yet posh, there are no phones, radios, or TVs to interrupt your romantic relaxation. Another romantic resort is Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows. If you love golf, here's where you'll find two of the island's nicest courses as well as a spa offering authentic Hawaiian treatments.
Perhaps try one of several B&Bs found on the Big Island. You will find that there are a fair number of small, interesting accommodations ranging from oceanfront rooms to private cottages on country estates. Ever woken up to a cup of coffee, grown outside your window? Delish! Most resorts on The Big Island are relatively self-contained, but there are still plenty of places you'll want to explore.
Romantic Dining on Hawaii's Big Island
Then there's the all-important romantic meal, and there's great opportunities to indulge yourself on the Big Island. In the early-1990s, a group of young chefs got together to create a cooking style specific to Hawaii that later became known as Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Many of these chefs still run gourmet restaurants that specialize in serving this type of cuisine. The Big Island, as the home of this cooking style, has thus become quite the culinary destination as well. The South Kohala resorts, Kailua-Kona, and the town of Waimea, in particular, are internationally renowned for their Hawaii Regional Cuisine.
Romantic Excursions on Hawaii's Big Island
Romance lives on the beaches of Hawaii's Big Island. Anaehoomalu Bay Beach, also known as "A-Bay," is close to the South Kona resorts and is an excellent spot for taking in the sunset. Hapuna State Beach is quite accessible and considered by many to be another premier spot for catching the setting sun. If a hike to a deserted tropical beach is on your menu, hike to one of the only green sand beaches in the word or to one of the amazing black sand beaches. And if deserted is what you and your loved one seek - there are desolate ancient Hawaiian sites dotting the island.
In terms of the Big Island's entertainment scene, there are a few enjoyable options to consider. The South Kohala and North Kona resorts feature hotel bars, hula dancing shows, luaus, and Polynesian shows, while, there is occasionally also live Hawaiian music. The luau at Kona Village Resort is considered to be the best and the Hilton Waikoloa Village features live music nightly. If you're in Kailua-Kona, there is a relatively lively bar scene on Alii Drive with live music and dancing.
Another opportunity for romance on the Big Island is to take a leisurely scenic drive. One choice, the Akoni Pule Highway cuts through the foothills of the Kohala mountains, offering broad vistas down to the ocean, and up to the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
Alternatively, you and your loved one can try rising above it all in style with a unique helicopter tour of the Big Island. Take in the awesome beauty of the Kohala mountains, fly alongside steep ocean cliffs and into deep, winding valleys and explore the coast in a helicopter that presents unforgettable views - and memories for a lifetime. And if a night flight suits your, fly over the Puu Oo vent and you'll see fountains of lava spurting into the air. Follow the lava down the cliff and see it pour into the ocean.
Whether you're taking a honeymoon to the Big Island or rekindling the flames with your long-time love, this is one of the very special places in the whole world to enhance your time spent. Relax, enjoy, and it will all unfold in front of your eyes! Aloha and Mahalo!
