Things to do / Travel Guide
In recognition of its bustling tourist industry, DC has a wide variety of shopping options to cater to the tastes of all its visitors. From souvenir shops to higher-end boutiques, large malls, and department stores, DC has it all. As a college town, there are also plenty of budget places to shop in the DC area.
All of the museums and attractions have gift shops that give visitors the chance to take novelty items home with them that are simply not found anywhere else. Notably, at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, one of the more popular items sold is a bag of shredded money. While it might not be useful for much, you'd be hard pressed to find hundreds of dollars of cash available anywhere else at such a good price! Other popular items include uncut sheets of discontinued two-dollar bills, which sell for slightly more than face value, as the money is still officially legal tender.
Even if you're not looking to take the train anywhere, you can take a trip out to Union Station for a fun shopping outing. A classically-designed train station, it showcases many unique shops including some famous for their political paraphernalia.
For shoppers who look to their vacations as the ideal time to pick up the latest designer fashions, Dupont Circle is the city's center for more upscale clothing shops. At Dupont Circle you'll likely find many of the same labels that you would associate with the latest fashion trends of New York and Paris. Boutiques and specialty stores can also be found along M Street in Georgetown.
The parking lot of the Arlington County Court House is where the Georgetown Flea Market takes place. It is at this flea market where you stand the best chance of getting a great deal on antiques and collectibles.
Shoppers in Baltimore need only head in the direction of the Inner Harbor, which is almost always jam packed with all types of stores, large and small. Nearby Fells Point also has a (much smaller) marketplace, designed to reflect the area's local flavors.
