Family Vacation Ideas for Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway, Alaska Panhandle

Things to do / Travel Guide

The Alaska Panhandle can make for an outstanding family vacation. With unparalleled natural beauty and a plethora of touring options, activities, and historical sites, the kids will want to come back over and over again, even if you had to convince them to come here over more-traditional family vacation spots.

Here are a few kid-friendly ideas to get you started:

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show

In Ketchikan, you can attend the Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where kids can root for their favorite competitor as modern-day lumberjacks saw and chop wood and demonstrate other typical woodsmen-like activities.

Klondike Gold Panning

This one is great fun for visitors to Skagway! A decked-out prospector teaches your family how to pan for gold. The best part…whatever you find, you keep! Fun for sure, but I wouldn't sell the farm just yet!

White Pass & Yukon Railroad

If your kids love trains, when in Skagway, they'll love this experience, with its gorgeous panoramic views of the area. Note that the excursion takes about three hours, so it might be too long for younger kids.

Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery and Eagle Center and Totem Heritage Center

Just outside Ketchikan (within walking distance from the center of town) is the Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery and Eagle Center. Visitors can tour a salmon- and trout-rearing facility, which is situated in a park-like stetting. The center is also home to a fair amount of bald eagles, and allows for up-close viewing and picture taking. From there, you can take the footbridge over Ketchikan Creek to the Totem Heritage Center where you and your family can see a collection of 19th-century totem poles carved by natives who used to live in now-abandoned nearby villages.
